# Hanukkah phone case insert ideas

**Short answer:** the simplest Hanukkah insert is a family photo with a short greeting in your own handwriting, printed at your phone’s size and slid behind a clear case. Other ideas: a hand-drawn menorah, a dreidel pattern in blue and white, an eight-night countdown, or a drawing by a child. Use your own pictures, keep the symbols simple, and ask someone who celebrates to look at your design if you are unsure.

**Key takeaways**

- In 2026 Hanukkah runs from sunset on 4 December to nightfall on 12 December, according to Wikipedia. Eight nights, so eight boxes.
- A drawn menorah on an insert is a picture only. It does not replace lighting the real one.
- Your own photos and drawings are the safest and most personal choice.
- Make a gift insert a week early, so you can fix the size.

We do not have Hanukkah designs in the gallery yet, so every idea here uses tools you already have in the [insert maker](https://phonecaseinserts.com/create): a photo, the text tool, stickers or the Draw tool. Check the camera corner of your phone first, because it hides part of the top of any insert.

## What Hanukkah is, in a few lines

According to Wikipedia, Hanukkah lasts eight nights and days, starting on the 25th of Kislev in the Hebrew calendar. It commemorates the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem. (Sources at the end, checked 22 October 2026.)

The same article describes the main customs. A Hanukkah menorah has nine branches: eight for the lights and one for the shammash, the “attendant” light used to kindle the others. One light is added each night, so one is lit on the first night and eight on the last. Lamps are set at a prominent window or near the street-facing door, though the article notes that most Hasidic groups place them near an inside doorway instead. Other customs include playing dreidel, a four-sided spinning top, giving gelt (money) and gifts, eating fried foods such as latkes and sufganiyot, and singing songs such as Ma’oz Tzur. My Jewish Learning calls the holiday the Festival of Rededication and the Festival of Lights. This is a short summary, and practice differs between families and communities.

## Pick an idea by effort

| Eight-night countdown | 15 minutes | Text tool or a pen |

## 8 Hanukkah ideas

1. **Family photo with a greeting.** A tall crop, faces in the lower two thirds, and “Happy Hanukkah” in the handwritten font below the camera area. [Make a photo insert](https://phonecaseinserts.com/photo-phone-case-insert).
2. **A hand-drawn menorah.** Nine simple candles, the middle one taller, on a dark blue insert. See [drawing ideas](https://phonecaseinserts.com/phone-case-drawing).
3. **A dreidel pattern.** Repeating tops in blue, white and silver-grey. Wikipedia says the dreidel’s letters stand for “A great miracle happened there”. If you add Hebrew letters, ask someone who reads Hebrew to check them.
4. **Blue and white stars and dots.** A calm pattern with the text tool and stickers.
5. **An eight-night countdown.** Eight small boxes you colour in, one per night (see the diagram below).
6. **A drawing by a child.** Photograph it flat in daylight and print it at the right size.
7. **A gelt-and-gifts tag.** “To:” and “From:” in handwriting, slid into a gift. Check the phone model first. See [gift ideas](https://phonecaseinserts.com/ideas/phone-case-insert-gift-ideas).
8. **A photo of your table.** Latkes, a plate of sufganiyot or the lit menorah, photographed safely and printed on photo paper.

## An eight-night countdown

Hanukkah starts at sunset, so the first night is the evening of 4 December and the eighth is the evening of 11 December; the holiday ends at nightfall on 12 December (Wikipedia). The insert below has eight boxes in two rows, with a small shammash dot in the middle. Colour one box each evening, or draw a small flame in it.

Diagram: eight boxes for eight nights, plus a dot for the shammash. A picture only; the real lights are lit as your family does.

## The eight nights at a glance

Using the 2026 dates from Wikipedia, here is what each evening looks like. My Jewish Learning describes the lighting as adding one candle on each night until all eight burn on the last night. ([My Jewish Learning: Hanukkah 101](https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/hanukkah-101/).) The shammash is the extra light used to kindle the others.

| Night | Evening of (2026) | Lights lit |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | 4 December | 1 + shammash |
| 2 | 5 December | 2 + shammash |
| 3 | 6 December | 3 + shammash |
| 4 | 7 December | 4 + shammash |
| 5 | 8 December | 5 + shammash |
| 6 | 9 December | 6 + shammash |
| 7 | 10 December | 7 + shammash |
| 8 | 11 December | 8 + shammash |

## Words and symbols at a glance

| Term | What the sources say | On an insert |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Menorah (hanukkiah) | A nine-branch lamp: eight lights and the shammash (Wikipedia); My Jewish Learning calls the Hanukkah lamp a hanukkiah | A simple row of nine candles |
| Dreidel | A four-sided spinning top; the letters abbreviate “A great miracle happened there” (Wikipedia) | A repeating top pattern; ask someone to check any Hebrew letters |
| Gelt | Money often given to children (Wikipedia); My Jewish Learning says Europeans traditionally gave small sums, and gift-giving became central in the Western world under Christmas’s influence | A gift tag or a coin-shaped dot pattern |
| Latkes and sufganiyot | Fried foods that recall the oil (My Jewish Learning) | A photo of your table |

## Colours, symbols and care

- **Keep it simple.** Blue, white and silver-grey print well on photo paper. Lines and flat shapes look clean at phone size.
- **Use your own artwork.** Draw your own menorah and dreidel, or photograph something you made. Do not copy another artist’s card.
- **Check any text.** If you add Hebrew words or blessings, ask someone who reads Hebrew to check them. We do not include blessings or religious texts.
- **No licensed characters or brand logos.**
- **Keep paper away from real flames.** Photograph the lit menorah; never put an insert near it.

## Paper, printing and timing

- Use glossy photo paper for photos and the deep blues of Hanukkah. See the [paper guide](https://phonecaseinserts.com/diy/best-paper-for-phone-case-inserts).
- Print at 100%. If it comes out too small, read [how to print at true size](https://phonecaseinserts.com/diy/print-phone-case-insert-at-100-percent).
- Cut around the camera hole with care; see [how to cut the camera hole](https://phonecaseinserts.com/diy/how-to-cut-the-camera-hole).

| When | What to do |
| --- | --- |
| Mid November | Choose the idea; find the exact phone model. |
| Late November | Print a plain-paper test and try it in the clear case. |
| Before 4 December | Print on photo paper; wrap the gift or start the countdown. |
| 4 to 12 December | Hanukkah 2026, from sunset on the first evening (Wikipedia). |

## Questions

When is Hanukkah in 2026?

Wikipedia gives sunset on 4 December to nightfall on 12 December 2026. Because it begins at sunset, check a calendar from your own community for exact times.

Can I make a Hanukkah insert if I am not Jewish?

For a friend or neighbour who celebrates, a thoughtful gift is usually welcome. Keep to simple, respectful motifs, ask them if you are unsure, and avoid anything you do not understand.

What do the dreidel letters mean?

Wikipedia says they stand for “A great miracle happened there.” If you add them, ask someone who reads Hebrew to check the letters.

Does a drawn menorah replace the real one?

No. It is a picture on a phone case. The lights are lit as your family or community does it.

Where do I find a Hanukkah template for my phone?

We do not have a Hanukkah gallery yet. Choose your phone in the [templates](https://phonecaseinserts.com/templates) list. The size and camera cutout are the same all year; only the picture changes.

What do I do with the insert afterwards?

Swap it for another design, or keep the file and reprint it next year.

**What this guide does not cover**We do not yet have Hanukkah designs in the gallery, so the ideas use your photos, text and drawings. The description of the holiday is a short summary from Wikipedia and My Jewish Learning, and practice varies between communities. Dates are from Wikipedia and I did not check them against a second calendar, so check a local one. The layout is an illustration: check the camera cutout of your own phone. We are not a religious authority; please ask someone who celebrates if you are unsure.
