Phone case insert gift ideas
Short answer: a clear phone case with a personal insert is a small gift that costs a sheet of paper and a few minutes. Choose a photo or message that matters to the person, find out their exact phone model, print at 100%, and give the insert inside the case. The model is the one thing you must get right, because variants of the same phone differ by several millimetres.

- Find the exact model name before you design anything. “iPhone 15” and “iPhone 15 Plus” differ by 6 mm in width and 13 mm in height.
- Give the insert together with a clear case for that model, or as a card if they already have one.
- Photo paper makes photos look best; test the fit on plain paper first.
- Keep the file. If the phone changes, reprint in a minute.

Find the right phone model
This is the one step that can ruin the gift. Phones with similar names are different sizes, and an insert for the wrong one will not fit. The diagram shows four iPhone 15 models at true proportions, using the manufacturer’s published sizes.
How to check the model
- iPhone: Settings, General, About, then Model Name (some versions label it Model). It shows “iPhone 15 Pro Max”, not just “iPhone”.
- Samsung and most Android phones: Settings, About phone. Read the model name (for example Galaxy S24 Ultra) and, if shown, the model number. Menu names vary a little between makers and versions.
- You cannot ask: look at a photo of the back of the phone (the camera layout often tells you), or at the existing case’s packaging or label.
- Still unsure: give the insert as a card with a note and the model name, and include the receipt for the clear case so it can be exchanged.
Then find the model in the templates list or the insert maker. If it is missing, measure the case instead.
Make it and wrap it
- Make the insert in the maker. Photos you upload from your device are cropped and printed in your browser and do not reach our server (see the privacy page); stock-photo search and pasted image links do go through it.
- Print a plain-paper test at 100%, cut it and try it in a clear case of the same model; then print on photo paper if it is a photo. Print guide.
- Cut the outline and the camera window, and test it in a clear case of the same model. Camera-hole guide.
- Give it inside the clear case, or as a flat card with a note: “Slide this behind your clear case.”

Three ways to present it
- In the case. The insert is already inside. The easiest to enjoy; needs the right case.
- As a card. A flat insert in a small envelope with a handwritten note. Good if they already own a clear case.
- As a set. Three inserts in an envelope, so they can swap them. Number each on the back with the model name.
Is it cheaper than buying one?
In our check of Google Shopping on 18 October 2026, ready-made inserts cost about $3 for a simple cardstock one up to about $8 each, and custom-photo inserts were around $7.50. A printable insert costs a sheet of paper and some ink, plus the clear case if you buy one.
Pick the gift by occasion
The same insert works for any occasion; what changes is the picture and how early you start. Lead times below are our own suggestions, based on a plain-paper test, a good print and a spare day.
| Occasion | Idea that suits it | Start |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday | A photo from the past year, or the person’s favourite colour and a short line | One week before |
| Anniversary | A photo of the two of you with the date in handwriting | Two weeks before |
| Graduation or leaving | A group photo or a collage of the whole team or class | Two weeks before, to collect photos |
| Thank-you or teacher gift | A class drawing or a thank-you line on a plain colour | Three or four days before |
| New baby | One clear photo and the date of birth | As soon as you have the photo |
| Just because | An inside joke, a pet or a favourite view | An evening |
Words for the card
If you give the insert as a card, a short note helps. These lines are original, so use them freely:
- “Slide this behind your clear case. When you are bored of it, I will make another.”
- “For your phone, from my printer. The camera hole is already marked.”
- “One of three. Swap whenever you like.”
- “Your exact model, I checked. If I got it wrong, I will reprint it.”
Envelopes that fit
A flat insert is a nice thing to hand over in an envelope. Wikipedia’s envelope article lists the common ISO sizes: DL is 110 × 220 mm and C6 is 114 × 162 mm. (Wikipedia: Envelope.) We compared those with the phone sizes in our maker, leaving 3 mm to spare on each side:
Photos of people: a short consent note
A gift is private, but a photo of another person still deserves a thought. Use pictures you took or were given, avoid photos of other people’s children unless their parents are happy for you to use them, and ask a partner or friend if you are not sure they would like a picture of themselves on show. This is courtesy, not legal advice.
Before you wrap: checklist
- You read the full model name from the phone’s settings or the box.
- The insert fits a clear case of that model on a plain-paper test.
- The camera window is cut and nothing important is hidden behind it.
- The picture is sharp: at least about 560 × 1,180 pixels after cropping, which our rule of thumb says is fine at arm’s length.
- You have a spare print or the file saved.
- The model name is written on the back in pencil.
Questions
Do I need to buy the clear case too?
The insert needs a clear case that fits the model. If the person already has one, you can give just the insert. Otherwise buy a clear case for their exact model and include the insert.
What if the phone gets replaced?
Reprint the insert for the new model. Keep the file or the photo, and it takes a minute.
Can a child make this gift?
Yes. A child can design and print an insert for a parent’s phone with some help. See designs for kids.
What if I guessed the model wrong?
Reprint it for the right one: the design stays the same, and only the size and camera cutout change.
Should I buy a case with a different colour rim?
Only if you know they like it. A plain clear case is the safest choice, because the insert provides the colour and the person can swap it.
Can I use a photo of someone else?
Use photos you took or have permission to use, and avoid posting or sharing a photo of someone else’s child without their parents’ consent. For a private gift the main thing is that the person likes it.
